Hi,
I encountered the same problem at my previously job.
Now I am developing with Flex. And my boss is happy. mE too :)

PS: I am using Microsoft .NET technology for server side coding... I think this is a great combination Flex+C#(on server side with Fluorine)

[...] I’ve been thinking lately, will I leave my beloved Flash and jump to the newer SilverLight?! After all that Flash did for me, made me the man I am today, got me this cool job I’m happily manage to wake up (almost) every morning to go to. Will I just leave that all behind? I know SilverLight is still underage but it might become very sexy eventually. What if it’ll become the better technology, can I just dismiss all of our past together, me and Flash, that is? I might also have an easier time pushing SilverLight then Flash, in my area. I’m defiantly gonna play with the real SilverLight (ver 2.0) when it’ll come out, that might be fun.
I hear you. Fl[ex][ash] haters will stop railing when people finally acknowledge the ease of maintaining a properly designed Flex application. You're in a good place, enjoy it.

the same argument will eventually arise from Adobe/MACR ppl in regards to Silverlight. Narrow minded people scared of their own ignorance is everywhere.

to be honest, your former bosses should be shot. They allowed a culture of ignorance and teratorialism to thrive. Fear of the unknown, and of employees resting on their skill sets is dangerous and your former bosses are to blame for not helping the CTO to break out of his bias and expand his horizons (and helping him keep current in new technology) - see how the other half live. The CTO sounds like merely a symptom, not the root cause. I can only imagine what the CTO's take on AIR was...

but the key, as you said, is to be flexable. And agile to change. *That's* how businesses thrive.

One of the reasons I deliberately switched to being a Mac user a couple of years ago was that I saw the way the wind was blowing about cross-platform. I started out as a VB5/6 and then ASP/ASP.NET programmer. Nothing makes a more pertinent point than trying to use a lock-in platform on a rival setup.

“How is your Macromedia/Adobe stocks are doing?”

I get the same argument being an Adobe user group manager, but I'm doing so because I'm backing a winner. The technology (Flex/AIR and by association, ColdFusion) is the reason I support it, not the other way around. if it were rubbish, I wouldn't waste my energies.

while I believe that standing still is actually going backwards, I'm the first to admit disappearing down every rabbit hole chasing the next shiny thing is also a recipe to failure. But that's where an open mind and dialog come in. Out of 10 choices there may be nine losers, but there's one winner in there somewhere.

eh my 2c.

cheers
