Michael,
You are right about that, Flash is also an Active-x but it is the most widely installed one. Will you except any active-x installation from any xy company? Many users can't or don't want to.

Mike,
Our Active-x is also used to read and write imges directly to the user, among other things he does that flash will never be able to do. But since it's isn't it's main purpose these functionalities can be deposed. Bascialy when you use an active-x (not the flash active-x) you get infinite power, that is only if you convince the user to install it.
We tried the server approach but the latency was too long.

Michael:

I believe he is refering to an ActiveX control that is used to display / process images. At my work, we are currently pondering over the same thing - simply because we want to display a thumbnail of an image from the users system -before- it is uploaded to the server.

I am a little curious what is being done with the ActiveX control for image processing that couldn't be accomplished in 8 (maybe the super-intense uber-feature could also be done on the server and passed back to the flash).

Nice read, thanks :)

I'm a little confused. Can Flash run without Active X? You said "I suggested, to rewrite the Active-X functionality in Flash ". But Flash must have the activeX enabled to even play its own version of activeX,no? Is this what your hombrew method does?
